Need something transferred? We got you covered.
Please contact TrueShot before having anything shipped.
Transfer requirements vary depending on the item, seller, shipment type, and California compliance status. Items shipped without notice, missing paperwork, or not legal for California transfer may be delayed, refused, returned, or subject to additional fees.
-
TrueShot Gunsmithing handles transfers for firearms, ammunition, firearm parts, accessories, barrels, and other eligible items. Transfer requirements vary depending on the item, where it is coming from, and whether California law requires additional processing or eligibility verification.
Before shipping anything to TrueShot, please review the applicable section below and contact us if you are unsure. Items that are not legal to transfer in California may be refused, returned, or subject to additional fees.
-

Please contact TrueShot before shipping anything. Fees may vary depending on the item, number of items, transaction type, documentation provided, and whether additional compliance review is required.

Before having anything shipped to TrueShot Gunsmithing, please contact us first. Transfer requirements depend on the item, where it is coming from, and whether it is a firearm, ammunition, barrel, firearm part, accessory, or other regulated item.
To get started, send us the following information:
Your full name and contact information
What type of item is being transferred
The make, model, caliber/gauge, and serial number, if applicable
Where the item is being purchased from or shipped from
The seller’s/dealer’s contact information
Order number and tracking number, if available
Once we review the information, we will let you know whether we can accept the item, what documentation is needed, and what transfer process applies.
Please do not have anything shipped to TrueShot without prior confirmation. Items shipped without notice, missing required paperwork, or not legal to transfer in California may be delayed, refused, returned, or subject to additional fees.
For firearm and ammunition transfers, you will be contacted after the item has been received and processed. A delivery notification from the carrier does not mean the item is ready for pickup. Please wait until TrueShot contacts you before coming in.
-
For a firearm transfer, please bring the required identification and paperwork with you when you come in to start the DROS/background check.
At minimum, most customers should bring:
Valid California driver license or California identification card
Valid Firearm Safety Certificate, unless exempt
Proof of California residency for handgun transfers
Any exemption documentation, if applicable
Payment for transfer fees, DROS/state fees, taxes, and any applicable excise tax
For handgun transfers, acceptable proof of residency may include items such as a current utility bill, residential lease, property deed, current vehicle registration, valid California CCW permit, or other qualifying government-issued license, permit, or registration showing your name and qualifying address.
If your California driver license or identification card says “Federal Limits Apply,” you may need to provide additional proof of lawful presence, such as a valid U.S. passport, certified birth certificate, Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship, valid Permanent Resident Card, or other qualifying documentation.
All information must match and be current. If your ID has an old address, a P.O. Box, mismatched name, expired document, or other issue, the transfer may be delayed or rejected.
The person listed on the transfer must be the person who completes the paperwork and picks up the firearm. Firearms cannot be released to a spouse, friend, family member, or other person who is not the approved transferee.
Please contact TrueShot before your appointment if you are unsure whether your documents will be accepted.
-
To avoid delays, the seller or shipper should include enough information for TrueShot Gunsmithing to identify the customer and process the transfer correctly.
Please have the seller include:
Customer’s full name and phone number
Order number, invoice, or packing slip
Seller’s name and contact information
Copy of the seller’s FFL, when applicable
Firearm make, model, caliber, and serial number, when applicable
CFLC Firearms Shipment Approval letter/number, when required
Tracking information, if available
For firearm shipments from another FFL to a California FFL, the shipping FFL is generally responsible for obtaining the California CFLC Firearms Shipment Approval number before shipment. DOJ says the shipping FFL obtains the approval number and provides it to the receiving FFL, and that one approval number is required per shipment, not per firearm.
Shipments that arrive without customer information, required paperwork, or compliance documentation may be delayed, refused, returned, or subject to additional fees.
-
Yes. TrueShot Gunsmithing can receive eligible firearm transfers from GunBroker, online retailers, out-of-state dealers, and other FFLs.
Before selecting TrueShot as your receiving dealer, please contact us first so we can confirm that the firearm is legal to transfer in California and that the shipper has the correct information.
The seller or shipping FFL must include:
Buyer’s full name and contact information
Seller/dealer name and contact information
A copy of the seller’s FFL, if applicable
Invoice, packing slip, or order number
Firearm make, model, caliber, and serial number
Tracking information, if available
California CFLC approval number/letter, when required
California requires most FFLs shipping firearms to a California FFL to obtain a CFLC Firearms Shipment Approval number before shipment. Private non-FFL shippers do not personally obtain a CFLC number, but they may need to use an FFL depending on the carrier, seller, and transaction details. CA DOJ’s CFLC FAQ confirms that FFL shippers need the approval number and that non-FFL individuals do not obtain it themselves.
Do not assume that a firearm is California-compliant just because a seller is willing to ship it. The buyer is responsible for confirming the firearm is legal to transfer in California before purchase. Firearms that are not legal to transfer may be refused, returned to the seller, or subject to additional fees.
Once the firearm is received and processed, TrueShot will contact you to schedule the transfer paperwork. A carrier delivery notification does not mean the firearm is ready for pickup or DROS. Please wait until we contact you.
-
TrueShot Gunsmithing can receive eligible ammunition transfers for California customers. Ammunition may be shipped to TrueShot from an online retailer, distributor, or other lawful seller, but please contact us before placing the order or having anything shipped.
Before ordering ammunition, please make sure the seller is willing to ship to a licensed California ammunition vendor or FFL, and make sure your name and contact information are included with the shipment.
When the ammunition arrives, TrueShot will process the transfer through the required California ammunition eligibility system. You will need to appear in person with valid identification before the ammunition can be released.
Most customers will need:
Valid California driver license, California identification card, or qualifying military identification
Additional lawful-presence documentation if your California ID says “Federal Limits Apply”
Current matching information in California DOJ records, unless using a Basic Ammunition Eligibility Check
Payment for TrueShot’s transfer fee, DOJ eligibility check fee, and any applicable taxes or fees
California ammunition eligibility checks are handled electronically through the DOJ system. A Standard Ammunition Eligibility Check is usually the common option when your information matches a firearm record in California’s Automated Firearms System. If your information does not match, a Basic Ammunition Eligibility Check may be required and can take longer.
A delivery notification from the carrier does not mean your ammunition is ready for pickup. Please wait until TrueShot contacts you after the shipment has been received, checked in, and is ready to process.
Ammunition that cannot legally be transferred, arrives damaged, arrives without proper customer information, or cannot be released due to a failed or delayed eligibility check may be refused, returned, or subject to additional fees.
-
TrueShot Gunsmithing can receive eligible firearm parts, accessories, and firearm barrels when allowed by California and federal law. Because the rules are different depending on the item, please contact us before ordering or having anything shipped.
Parts and accessories may include items such as stocks, grips, handguards, magazines, triggers, small parts, optics mounts, repair parts, and other firearm-related products. Some sellers may ship certain parts directly to the customer if they complete California’s required notice, age verification, identity verification, and delivery requirements. Other sellers may require shipment to an FFL or licensed dealer.
Unattached firearm barrels are treated differently. California law requires standalone firearm barrel sales or transfers to be completed in person through a licensed firearms dealer. Beginning July 1, 2027, firearm barrel transfers will also require a DOJ-prescribed eligibility check and transaction record process.
Before shipping parts, accessories, or barrels to TrueShot, please provide:
Your full name and contact information
The seller’s name and contact information
A description of the item being shipped
Order number, invoice, or packing slip
Tracking number, if available
Any compliance paperwork provided by the seller
Items that are illegal to possess, sell, transfer, or install in California will not be accepted. This may include, but is not limited to, prohibited magazines, assault weapon conversion parts, machinegun conversion devices, unserialized frames or receivers, improperly configured parts kits, or other restricted items.
The customer is responsible for confirming that the item is legal before purchase. Items that are not legal to transfer, arrive without proper information, or cannot be released may be refused, returned to the seller, or subject to additional fees.
A carrier delivery notification does not mean the item is ready for pickup. Please wait until TrueShot contacts you after the shipment has been received, reviewed, and processed.
-
It depends on the item.
Regular firearm parts and accessories do not all use the same process as firearms or ammunition. Many common parts and accessories may be eligible for transfer without a firearm DROS or ammunition-style eligibility check, but they may still be subject to California’s age, identity, notice, acknowledgment, shipping, and delivery requirements.
Unattached firearm barrels are treated separately under California law. A firearm barrel that is not attached to a firearm must be transferred in person through a licensed firearms dealer, unless an exemption applies. Beginning July 1, 2027, California will require a DOJ-prescribed eligibility check before an unattached firearm barrel can be transferred. The purchaser or transferee must be at least 18 years old and not prohibited from possessing, receiving, owning, or purchasing firearms.
Frames, receivers, unfinished receivers, “80%” items, firearm precursor parts, and serialized components are not treated as ordinary accessories. These items may require a different process, may need to be transferred as firearms, or may not be accepted at all depending on the item and current law.
Because the rules depend heavily on the exact item, please contact TrueShot before ordering or shipping any barrel, frame, receiver, unfinished part, parts kit, or questionable accessory. Items that cannot legally be transferred may be refused, returned, or subject to additional fees.
-
Please contact TrueShot Gunsmithing before shipping anything that may be restricted, unusually configured, incomplete, serialized, or California-sensitive. California firearm laws are item-specific, and a product being listed for sale online does not automatically mean it can be transferred in California.
You should contact us before shipping:
Off-roster handguns from an online seller, out-of-state dealer, or private seller
AR/AK-style firearms or any firearm with “assault weapon” compliance concerns
Firearms with threaded barrels, folding/telescoping stocks, pistol grips, flash hiders, forward grips, fixed-magazine devices, or other compliance-sensitive features
Magazines or magazine parts that may exceed California capacity limits
Frames, receivers, serialized components, barreled receivers, or complete lowers
“80%,” unfinished, unserialized, or privately made firearm items
Unattached firearm barrels
Parts kits, build kits, conversion kits, or anything intended to significantly change a firearm’s configuration
Ammunition shipments, especially if the seller has not shipped to a California FFL or ammunition vendor before
NFA items, suppressors, machinegun parts, destructive devices, or anything that appears federally restricted
Any item where the seller says, “Your FFL can probably figure it out”
When in doubt, ask before ordering. Items that cannot legally be transferred, are missing required paperwork, arrive without customer information, or require return shipment may be refused, delayed, returned to the seller, or subject to additional fees.
A delivery notification from the carrier does not mean the item has been accepted for transfer or is ready for pickup. Please wait until TrueShot has reviewed the shipment and contacted you.
-
If an item is not legal to transfer in California, TrueShot Gunsmithing cannot release it to the customer.
This may include firearms, ammunition, magazines, parts, accessories, barrels, receivers, or other items that are prohibited, improperly configured, missing required paperwork, or otherwise not eligible for transfer under California or federal law.
Depending on the item and the situation, TrueShot may:
Refuse the shipment
Hold the item while compliance is reviewed
Return the item to the seller or shipper
Require additional paperwork or correction before processing
Offer compliance work, if lawful and practical
Decline the transfer entirely
The customer is responsible for making sure an item is legal to purchase, ship, receive, possess, and transfer in California before ordering it. A seller’s willingness to ship an item does not guarantee that the item is legal for California transfer.
If an item must be returned, the customer is responsible for all related costs, including return shipping, handling, storage, taxes, fees, and any labor or compliance review already performed.
TrueShot does not guarantee refunds, cancellations, or return acceptance by the original seller. Those issues must be handled between the customer and the seller.
When in doubt, contact TrueShot before ordering or shipping the item. It is much easier to review a questionable item before it ships than to deal with a problem after it arrives.
-
You may pick up your item only after TrueShot Gunsmithing has received it, processed it, and contacted you that it is ready for pickup or paperwork.
A carrier delivery notification does not mean the item is ready. Shipments must be checked in, matched to the correct customer, reviewed for paperwork, and processed before pickup or transfer can begin.
Firearm Transfers
For firearms, California requires the DROS/background check process to be completed before the firearm can be released. The waiting period is ten 24-hour periods from the date and time the DROS is accepted by DOJ and a DROS number is issued.
Once the waiting period is complete and the firearm is approved for delivery, TrueShot will let you know when it can be picked up. Firearms must be picked up within the allowed delivery window. If the firearm is not delivered within 30 days of DROS submission, the DROS must be canceled and a new DROS, new fees, and a new waiting period may be required.
Ammunition Transfers
Ammunition may be picked up after it has been received, processed, and the required California ammunition eligibility check has been approved. Please wait for TrueShot to contact you before coming in.
Parts, Accessories, and Barrel Transfers
Parts, accessories, and barrels may be picked up after the shipment has been received, reviewed, and any required transfer steps have been completed. Some items may require additional review before they can be released.
For all pickups, please bring valid identification and any required documents. The person listed on the transfer must be the person who completes the paperwork and picks up the item. Items cannot be released to a spouse, friend, family member, or other person unless the law and transaction type specifically allow it.
Please do not come in for pickup until TrueShot contacts you. This helps avoid wasted trips, especially when a shipment has been delivered by the carrier but has not yet been processed.
-
In most cases, no. The person listed on the transfer must be the person who completes the required paperwork, passes any required background or eligibility check, and picks up the item.
For firearm transfers, the firearm can only be released to the approved purchaser or transferee listed on the DROS. A spouse, friend, family member, coworker, or other person cannot pick up the firearm for you simply because they have your permission, receipt, or order information. California requires firearms transfers to go through the DROS process, and the firearm may only be released after the required waiting period and approval requirements are satisfied.
For ammunition transfers, the person receiving the ammunition must appear in person, provide the required identification, and receive DOJ approval through the ammunition eligibility check process before the ammunition can be released.
For parts, accessories, barrels, and other non-firearm items, TrueShot may still require the named customer to pick up the transfer unless other arrangements are approved in advance and the transfer is lawful.
To avoid delays, make sure the order is placed under the same name as the person who will complete the transfer and pick up the item. Items will not be released to someone else just because they are “picking it up for you.”
